About Us

Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church was started on May 6, 1984 when some 100 believers met at Brookridge Apartments Community Center on Harris Boulevard for worship and to ascertain the will of God, seeking divine guidance concerning the formation of a new church.  Subsequent meetings were held at a private home in Matthews, and then at Lawyers Road Baptist Church, at which time the temporary name of Liberty Christian Fellowship was adopted.  A steering committee was elected to guide the organization of a new Southern Baptist Church.

Plans were formulated for the renting of the Seven-Day Adventist Church.  On Father’s Day, June 17th, 1984, regular services began in the Seven-Day Adventist Church.  This proved to be an excellent arrangement.  Since the Seventh-Day Adventist Church met on Saturday, this group of believers had full use of a beautiful church plant.  This also allowed for full organization of the new church and time to raise money for the purchase of property on which to establish this new church.  The permanent name of “Mt Lebanon Baptist Church” was chosen by ballot in July 1984.

Through this time, two important events took place on June 24, 1984, the church’s first convert was saved, and that evening the church observed the Lord’s Supper for the first time as a new church.

Reverend William E. Saylor accepted the call to become the first pastor of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.  He served Mt. Lebanon from July 8, 1984 through December 1997.  Upon Pastor Saylor’s announcement of his plans to retire, a pulpit committee was formed and a search for a new pastor began.  Pastor Saylor retired in December 1997.  In February 1998, Reverend Joel R. Mullis, serving at Union Baptist Church, Union County North Carolina, accepted the call to become the second pastor of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Mt. Lebanon Church was formally constituted as a Southern Baptist Church with 116 charter members on August 26, 1984.  Soon a property committee was elected and began to search for available property in the area of Idlewild and Lawyers Roads near Independence High School.  December 14, 1984, the present church property was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Yandell.  The property was dedicated to God for His kingdom work in the community on July 14, 1985.  In fourteen months, the church, by hard work and sacrificial giving, raised $93,000 and paid off the debt on the property.

After the Yandells moved, the church members remodeled the home place, making it usable for worship.  The Baptist State Convention, through the Missions Department, provided a trailer for Sunday school space for the next three years.  On April 6, 1986, the first regular worship service was held on the property.  Ground was broken on April 15, 1987 for the beginning of the new church building.  Mt. Lebanon moved into its new building on December 4, 1988.  Dedication of the new building followed on February 12, 1989.  The building of a new education building was later completed and dedicated on November 16, 1997.

Reverend Mullis is still serving as pastor Mt. Lebanon and is fondly referred to as Pastor Joe by members of his congregation.  Serving by his side are Andy Gazak as Music Director, Mike Thomas as Director of the Sunday School Department, Lori Pennigar as Youth Director, and Gail Johnson as Secretary.

Toward the end of each October, the church membership gathers together to hold its annual barbeque.  This has been an annual fundraiser/outreach for the church from the beginning years of the church.  Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church has the reputation of serving up some of the best barbeque in the area.  The smells of the cookers draw individuals from all over the community.  Every member has the opportunity to participate in some way to help with this project.

This young church is still making strides in becoming a strong evangelistic/missions center for our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ in this community.  Pastor Joe’s heart and the vision of the church are to see people come to know the saving grace of Jesus Christ.  Every member has a wonderful opportunity to invest and grow, as Mt. Lebanon becomes a great church in the years to come.  With love for Jesus and for each other, and the selfless service with sacrificial giving, the dream of the first members continues on.  Currently services are held on Sunday with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m., Worship Service beginning at 11:00 a.m., with Bible Study and Choir Practice on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
